On 20th May, all of our Year 7 pupils experienced their Character Day. The focus of the day was centred around Healthy Living and involved sessions around; 'Understanding ourselves and our emotions', 'Personal Safety', 'Healthy Food Choices' and 'The Importance of Good Sleep'. All pupils experienced a PE lesson exploring Personal Fitness and we were also joined by the fantastic Medical Mavericks!

Medical Mavericks was an incredibly impactful opportunity for our Year 7 students,  offering students hands-on, immersive experiences that helped them explore a wide range of careers in the medical and STEM fields. By engaging students, especially girls, in interactive workshops, it appeared the initiative successfully sparked curiosity and excitement about the different types of roles available in the healthcare sector.

The hands-on activities, such as trying keyhole surgery, taking blood from a robotic arm, and conducting ultrasounds, allowed students to gain practical skills while exploring how science and technology intersect with healthcare. The inclusion of workbooks and information on alternative pathways into the medical field also provided a holistic approach, helping to demystify the many routes into these careers.

By providing an interactive environment where students felt encouraged to ask questions and explore, the project fostered a greater sense of confidence and curiosity, which are essential for personal and academic growth. The positive feedback and the increase in students’ well-being indicate that this kind of engagement not only raises interest in STEM but also contributes to a more inclusive and supportive learning culture.

Medical Mavericks have effectively used the NHS as a context for exploring both professional and non-professional roles, showing that there’s a diverse range of opportunities within the healthcare sector. This helped students see the broader impact these roles can have, whether in a clinical, technical, or support role.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Tesco Stronger Starts Scheme for their generous funding and support, which made this exciting project possible. Their commitment to empowering young people and fostering a passion for STEM and healthcare careers will help inspire the next generation of professionals. This partnership has allowed us to provide hands-on, engaging experiences to students, particularly girls, encouraging them to explore the diverse opportunities in the NHS and STEM fields.

Tesco's dedication to community engagement and education aligns perfectly with our mission to open doors to new career paths, and we are incredibly grateful for their contribution to the success of this initiative. We look forward to continuing this impactful work together and creating more opportunities for our students in the future.
