Our approach to uniform

At Washwood Heath Academy, our uniform is worn with pride. It gives every pupil a shared sense of identity and belonging, removes the pressure of “what to wear”, and helps create a calm, purposeful environment where pupils are ready to learn from the moment they arrive.

We are also committed to keeping uniform affordable. Only two items — the blazer and tie — need to be bought from our branded supplier. Everything else can be purchased from any high-street retailer or supermarket. We run a pre-loved uniform service and offer support to any family who needs it (see Pre-loved uniform and financial support below).

Every pupil is expected to be in full uniform every day, with a suitable bag for their equipment. This page covers our secondary phase (Years 7–11). Our Primary uniform and Sixth Form dress code are on separate pages.

Where to buy your uniform

Branded items (blazer and tie) — from Mansuri Schoolwear. The grey blazer with the embroidered WHA badge and the school tie are only available from our uniform supplier:

All other items — from any retailer. The shirt, trousers or skirt, shoes, socks or tights, headscarf and school bag do not carry a logo and can be bought wherever is most convenient and affordable for your family, including supermarkets and high-street shops — as long as they meet the descriptions in the uniform list below.

Year-group tie colours

Each year group wears a tie in its own colour. Please make sure your child has the correct colour for their year:

Footwear

Shoes are a common area of confusion, so please read this carefully. Pupils must wear plain black, polishable school shoes. Trainers are not permitted — with or without logos, and including all-black trainers or shoes that are designed to look like trainers.

PE kit

All students are expected to attend PE lessons in the correct school PE kit. This consists of a plain black polo shirt, plain black shorts, plain black socks and trainers. During colder weather, students may wear a plain black polo jumper and plain black jogging bottoms. All items must be plain black with no logos or branding. Students should also wear black trainers and bring their PE kit in a suitable bag. We ask parents and carers to ensure students arrive fully prepared for PE lessons and follow the school’s uniform expectations at all times.

Jewellery, hair, make-up and accessories

To maintain a strong sense of pride and equality, we have clear expectations in these areas.

Jewellery

One small stud earring in each ear lobe only.
One small nose stud is permitted — no hooped nose rings.
All permitted jewellery must be removed for every PE lesson.
No other jewellery or piercings.

Hair

Hair should be a natural colour.
No lines or patterns cut into the hair or eyebrows.
Hair must be tied back for practical activities, using appropriate hair accessories.
Metal headbands are not allowed, for safety reasons.

Make-up and nails

Pupils may wear discreet, natural make-up that is not noticeable. Anything more will need to be removed.
False eyelashes are not allowed and will need to be removed in school.
False nails and coloured nail polish are not allowed. Nails should look natural and be an appropriate length for school.

Accessories and badges

No fashion accessories should be worn.
Pupils may only wear badges or items given to them by the Academy — no additional badges or items.

Equipment for learning

Being organised and ready to learn is part of becoming an independent learner. Every pupil should bring a suitable school bag each day containing:

This is not an exhaustive list. Some subjects need specialist equipment, which class teachers will let pupils know about. A reading book is also encouraged every day.

Frequently asked questions

Do we have to buy everything from the branded supplier?

No. Only the blazer and tie are branded and come from Mansuri Schoolwear. The shirt, trousers or skirt, shoes, socks or tights, headscarf and bag can be bought from any retailer or supermarket, as long as they match our uniform descriptions.

How can we keep the cost down?

Buy the non-branded items from wherever is most affordable, use our pre-loved uniform service, and label everything clearly so items can be returned if lost. Please get in touch if you would like support.

What counts as a school shoe rather than a trainer?

A plain black, polishable leather-style shoe (lace-up, Velcro, bar-strap or ballerina flat) is fine. Anything with a trainer-style sole, sports branding, or that is designed to look like a trainer is not permitted — even if it is all black. See the Footwear section above.

Should we label uniform?

Yes, please. Clearly naming every item, including ties, blazers and PE kit, makes it much easier to reunite lost property with its owner.
