Maths

“Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.” Albert Einstein

Our Intent:

We believe all children across the academy can achieve in mathematics and we teach for a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, allowing all children to develop their confidence in the subject.

We want our children to build on prior knowledge. By revisiting topics and embedding new learning, this will help the children have a rich, balanced and progressive curriculum. We want all pupils to become fluent in all domains of the mathematics curriculum using maths to reason, problem solve and develop fluency. The curriculum aims to build on previous key stages, where children can make connections across topics, showing embedded practice and progression.

Our curriculum is frequently reviewed to ensure that it is current and effective and teachers are supported and aided in their teaching of mathematics through appropriate high quality CPD, ensuring confidence in the skills and knowledge that they are required to teach.

Our ambitious mathematics curriculum across all key stages allows children to make sense of the world around them by making connections and asking questions between mathematics and everyday life. The coherent structure of the mathematics curriculum across the academy shows consistency and clear progression in line with age related expectations. Teaching the curriculum using the mastery approach allows children to explore skills and knowledge in depth and gain a secure understanding of the curriculum.

We aim to ensure that mathematics is a high-profile subject, where pupils view the subject positively and with a ‘Can do’ attitude. We want all children to see that they are mathematicians and have the confidence to progress well in the subject. Maths vocabulary is developed over the key stages, to ensure the progression of disciplinary literacy and oracy skills. Pupils learn new vocabulary over time to ensure they can articulate, argue and justify their views using mathematical language appropriately.
