Washwood Heath English Department has undergone dramatic change and much improvement during the last few years. The Department is staffed by well qualified and enthusiastic teachers, with a wealth of teaching experience. The English curriculum and exam syllabi are delivered effectively using a range of teaching strategies, resources, texts and pupil materials.

Teaching and Learning are exciting and challenging in English; pupils follow a well structured programme of study, with opportunities to read a wealth of fiction and non fiction from different cultures, traditions and centuries. Furthermore, through the ‘Halo’ homework programme, pupils are given a homework project to complete every half term. This approach to homework encourages independent learning, organisational skills, team work and meeting deadlines.

Pupils develop their learning and understanding through a variety of extra curricular activities and competitions, including a Reading Club, Cr eative Writing Club, Film Club and Gifted and Talented Club. Each year, the Department invites poets and Th eatre Companies into school to develop pupils’ experience and understanding of texts through a range of workshops.

The English Department is proud of its pupils’ exam success. Last year –

  • 52% achieved A*-C in English GCSE
  • 89% achieved A* – C in English Literature GCSE
